Michael Otis Chandler (born April 21, 1958), is a former driver in the CART Championship Car series. He raced in the 1980-1984 seasons, with 9〔9 starts do not include the 1981 or 1982 Indy 500, as it was not a CART race that year.〕 career starts, and started in the Indianapolis 500 in 1981-1983. A near head-on crash in practice for the 1984 race left him in a coma for several days and prematurely ended his career. Buffum's department stores were co-founded by his great-grandfather, former Mayor of Long Beach, California Charles Abel Buffum and great-grand uncle Edwin E. Buffum. Dorothy Buffum Chandler, a patron for the arts and a Regent for the University of California, was Michael's grandmother. He is the great-great grandson of newspaper publisher, Harrison Gray Otis.
